Queenstown Research Week

Queenstown Research Week is New Zealand’s largest annual scientific event, combining multiple major meetings—including the Queenstown Molecular Biology Meeting and the New Zealand Medical Sciences Congress—into a coordinated week-long program that attracts over 1,500 participants for interdisciplinary scientific exchange across diverse disciplines.

Event Overview

Queenstown Research Week is New Zealand’s largest annual scientific gathering, featuring a week of coordinated meetings that cover a wide range of scientific disciplines. The event originated from the collaboration of three iconic New Zealand scientific meetings: the Australasian Winter Conference on Brain Research, the Queenstown Molecular Biology Meetings, and the NZ Medical Sciences Congress (MedSci). By coordinating their programs, these meetings have created a critical mass for scientific exchange.

The event has expanded to include a diverse range of satellite meetings each year, providing focused sessions for specialist areas within the New Zealand science community. Over 1,500 participants attend annually, with presentations from leading scientists worldwide. Registration for one meeting allows participants to attend any of the concurrent meetings, maximizing opportunities for interdisciplinary interaction.

31st Annual Queenstown Molecular Biology Meeting

The Queenstown Molecular Biology (QMB) Meeting will follow the same format as in 2019, running as a two-day general science meeting on Wednesday, September 1st, and Thursday, September 2nd. This meeting is recognized as New Zealand’s premier broad-based molecular bioscience event, attracting high-level researchers from across the country. Dr. Maren Wellenreuther from Plant and Food Research coordinates the organizing committee, and approximately 200 registrants are expected.

16th New Zealand Medical Sciences Congress

MedSci is New Zealand’s leading multi-disciplinary biomedical and medical sciences conference. It incorporates meetings of the Physiological Society of NZ, the NZ Society of Endocrinology, and special interest groups from the Auckland Bioengineering Institute, the Institute of Biomedical Technologies, and the Otago Centre for Neuroendocrinology. In recent years, MedSci has been held as part of Queenstown Research Week, attracting over 150 delegates. The 2021 MedSci congress will be held on Wednesday, September 1st, and Thursday, September 2nd. The chief conveners are Associate Professor Rebecca Campbell and Dr. Jeff Ericksson from the University of Otago.
